Dalskuggan – Hidden In The Shadows

By Viveca Sten

It’s Winter holiday in Åre when a badly battered corpse is found outside the village. The victim has no known enemies and the Åre police stand helpless. Hanna Ahlander is still holding on to her temporary post but she is hoping to get a permanent placement. Her colleague Daniel Lindskog is torn between his family and work.

Meanwhile a free-church cult has been growing stronger in several of the more isolated villages close to the Norwegian border. The young Rebecka dreams of serving God as a loyal pastor’s wife, but she grows more and more vulnerable and isolated. Nobody is taking her side and soon she starts to fear for her life.

When new secrets are revealed an ever darker history is untangled. Hanna and Daniel are pulled into a complicated investigation that is all about survival – by any means possible.

Hidden in the Shadows is the second part of the Åre Murders. A series where Viveca Sten weaves together the grandeur of nature with strong characters in thrilling murder investigations that completely spellbinds the readers.

“Sten delivers a pulse-pounding, character-driven follow-up…[diving] deep into the family lives of her characters… It makes for nuanced, emotional storytelling that doesn’t stint on thrills.”
– Publishers Weekly, US

“The author has the ability to create scenes so believable that you can almost touch them. The suspense is vibrating underneath the surface – all the way to the resolution. The dramaturgy captures the readers holding them in a tight grip and the novel is easily read in one go.”
– BTJ, Sweden

“It’s thrilling and empathetic.”
– Norrbottens-kuriren, Sweden

“Viveca Sten knows the art of constructing a suspense story and she uses the inherent drama of Åre to her advantage, both in terms of nature, weather conditions and the contrast between residents and tourists.”
– Ölandsbladet, Sweden

“Viveca Sten manages to convey the feeling of winter and the Jämtland landscape in an excellent way. You feel the chill of the snow and the cold, and she also manages to capture the contrast between the untouched nature and the areas that have been heavily exploited with luxury huts in recent years. […] The language, the plot and the people have found their form, and the suspense and the portrayals of the characters are gripping.”

“Viveca Sten is one of the genre’s most talented authors!
Of course it is incredibly well written, the predominant present tense creates a strong sense of presence, and there is an elegant movement between the different points of view as well as a gradual shift in tempo towards the highly dramatic finale. The intrigue is complicated but one never has to worry; this is an author who never ever loses a thread before it eventually gets neatly tied up.
There is a simple explanation as to why Viveca Sten is so successful: she is one of the best in the genre. The story expands over quite a few pages but this book is simply impossible to put down; you just have to keep reading with a happy smile on your lips. Despite the title this is not a shadow but a shining example of a text!”
