Alberte Winding’s new novel, A Song to Cry To, is now out in Denmark, published by Gutkind.

A Song to Cry To is a raw, vibrant, and sensitive novel about groping your way through the middle of life.

Saskia is 42 years old and has traveled to New York with her microphone to create a sound art project. However, she has primarily traveled because she is in the midst of an existential crisis. Her relationship has ended, and the role she believed she would have as a mother is beginning to crumble.

In the bustling metropolis, she meets Danish Asta and a small group of her friends, and Saskia is both drawn into their friendship and falls outside the group. With her microphone in hand, she walks through the city and meets strangers who talk about age and parenthood. In brief flashes, she recalls her childhood and her mother’s darkness and vulnerability in her preoccupation with what it means to be a mother and not to be a mother.
