WHEN THE WAR in Yugoslavia breaks out, the former party secretary seeks refuge in the mountains of Herzegovina. Down by the sea, his home town, Dubrovnik, is bombed to pieces, and whilst he waits for the country to return to normal, a letter arrives from home: his wife has died. Upon receiving the letter, he is haunted by thoughts of how he has betrayed not only his wife and friends, but everything he has believed in – and he relives who he was, back when he still professed his ideals, and when he renounced them. Thus haunted by the choices he has made in his life, he is forced to make a decision that could prove fatal.

TWIN COUNTRIES IS a novel about that which is ever-present wherever we go and wherever we have been, and which carries our lives and longings. About that which is blind and silent, yet from which we can never escape. Without it, we would perish – and we must fight for it, murder for it and sacrifice ourselves for it.
