WHEN THE BEAUTIFUL Signora Lucia gives birth to an heir – a little girl – in the early 1700s, there is great joy at Villa Valmarana. But as the years go by, concerns begin to arise: the girl, Jana, is not growing as she should, and it is soon established that she is a dwarf. The family decides to shut the villa off from the outside world and arranges it so that Jana does not get the impression that she is abnormal. But as Jana comes of age and suitors begin to arrive, lured by rumours of her wealth and beautiful face, she realises how things are connected and decides to run away and set out into the world.
