LEMVIG, 1979. At Cheminova’s request, a sixth-form college opens in the town, and a group of young, enthusiastic teachers move to West Jutland. Stine, Margrethe’s 16-year-old daughter, joins the first intake and is captivated by the teachers, who have arrived with the dream of uplifting the local area through education.
THE DANISH TEACHER, Søren, is married to Vibeke, who had previously left Lemvig with her mother and father, but now has to settle back into the small community.
MARGRETHE CONTINUES TO struggle to find her footing between her two men, the brothers Niels and Erik. At Cheminova, Erik is fighting his own battle as a union representative, whilst secretly tormented by a promise he made to Margrethe many years ago.
THE GREATEST PROMISES is a story of two families who, for decades, have been bound together through thick and thin. It is about big dreams in a time of upheaval. And about breaking patterns, whilst still being bound by one’s roots.
